The New Warrior Training Adventure is a residential weekend of initiation and self-exploration – the classic hero’s journey, adapted for modern men.
Over one weekend, with a team of men beside you, you will have the opportunity to face the parts of you that no longer serve you, and to step towards the man you want to be. There is nothing to prepare and nothing to fake – you bring yourself exactly as you are, and the weekend meets you there.
This is not a retreat, a conference or a workshop. It’s not like anything you’ve done before.
What to expect on the New Warrior Training Adventure
A residential weekend, Friday evening to Sunday afternoon – a mix of challenge, ritual, honesty and genuine fun. The trained volunteer staff have all done the weekend themselves. Everything is held in strict confidence, and you’re always in charge of how deep you go.
It is not therapy, not a lecture, and not a boot camp. It is a structured, experiential process – built from decades of men’s work and adapted here in Aotearoa – that helps you see yourself clearly and choose how you want to live. Many men describe it as one of the more significant weekends of their lives.
The men who run it
The New Warrior Training Adventure is delivered entirely by trained volunteers – ordinary men who have done the weekend themselves and come back to staff it for the next group. It is part of the global ManKind Project, which has initiated more than 80,000 men across 27 countries since 1985. In Aotearoa New Zealand the weekend has been adapted to our culture and landscape while keeping the heart of the work intact.
What men gain
- Emotional honesty – name what you feel instead of being run by it.
- A vision & mission – know how you want to live your life
- Healthier relationships – show up more fully as a partner, father, colleagues and mate.
- Clarity of purpose – get honest about what you actually want.
- A brotherhood that lasts – men who’ll have your back long after the weekend.
None of this is abstract. Men leave the New Warrior Training Adventure with practical tools, a clearer sense of themselves, and a circle of men to keep using them with.
Who it’s for
Men 18 and over, from every walk of life, faith and background. Most men who do the NWTA want more from life. We welcome all men.
You do not need to be in crisis, or to have it all worked out. Most men who choose the New Warrior Training Adventure simply sense there is more available to them – in their relationships, their work, and how they carry themselves – and are willing to go and find it. If that is you, you are ready enough.

A note on safety: the NWTA is peer support, not therapy. This is not for you at a time of an acute mental health crisis. We encourage out for professional support first – see Is the NWTA right for me?

Beyond the weekend
The weekend is a beginning, not an end. Most men who complete the New Warrior Training Adventure carry on in a men’s I-Group – a small circle that meets regularly, close to home, to keep doing the work alongside other men. From there the path keeps opening: advanced trainings, leadership, and real ways to serve. What you start over three days becomes something you can sustain for years. Most I-Groups are free, meet close to home, and welcome new men at any time.
